From the "Dean's Commentary" honoring the Rev. Dr. Richard Jones

Congratulations on your retirement, Rich Jones!!!

~the Rev. Peter M. Carey

5/8/2009

Our friend and colleague, the Rev. Dr. Richard Jones, has been teaching at Virginia Theological Seminary since 1988. On this day, we honor and celebrate those remarkable years of service.

The program around the theme of ‘The Unfinished Business of Mission’ is rich and imaginative. Today, we start with reports from the field; then at 1pm, we have the Plenary Session with Professor Robert Schreiter from the Chicago Theological Union; and then in the late afternoon, we have some delightful workshops. For those who have not registered for this program, we would still welcome your participation. This is an exciting opportunity to learn about the important world of mission.

This program comes to a climax with a Holy Eucharist at 5pm in the Seminary Chapel. We are delighted that Bishop Neff Powell is the Celebrant and the Rev. Leon Spencer is the Preacher. All are welcome to this service.

Rich Jones has made a difference to countless lives. He has constantly witnessed to the importance of global Christianity; he has encouraged careful study of other faith traditions; and he has been a sensitive pastoral presence bringing considerable humor to countless situations.

As this important day arrives, we celebrate our friend and colleague and we wish Rich and Jody all the best as they embark on the exciting journey of retirement.
