Seems to me that there is a lot of "fretting" going on these days. What are you fretting about? Do you see others fretting? Well, the Psalmist reminds us "do not fret because of evildoers; do not be jealous of those who do wrong." These ones will "wither like the grass." Our time is one of anxiety, deep anxiety about the economy, war, terrorism, environmental destruction and all the rest. Where do we put our trust? Where do we find rest? Do we rush around like crazy-busy people trying to solve all the problems? Do we put our collective heads in the sand and avoid the world? The psalmist reminds us to put our trust in the Lord, and do good! To both rest and find calm in God, but also to do good. In the midst of fretting and anxiousness, we need to look deeply to that place where God abides and then also find a way to act in ways that show that we do, indeed, delight in the Lord.
This season of waiting and expectation and even penitence is one in which we can practice trust in God, while also realizing that we also need to get busy for the enacting of God's Kingdom. We have some role in the preparation for the reign of God. We are activated by the love of God, so that we might get busy and get going to work with diligence in the hope of God's coming.
In the midst of fretting and anxiousness, God comes into the world, giving us joy and peace and calm in the midst of the storm, and giving us the energy to get busy and get working.

Psalm 37 1-7
|1||Do not fret yourself because of evildoers; *|
do not be jealous of those who do wrong.
|2||For they shall soon wither like the grass, *|
and like the green grass fade away.
|3||Put your trust in the Lord and do good;|
dwell in the land and feed on its riches.
|4||Take delight in the Lord, *|
and he shall give you your heart's desire.
|5||Commit your way to the Lord and put your trust in him, *|
and he will bring it to pass.
|6||He will make your righteousness as clear as the light*|
and your just dealing as the noonday.
|7||Be still before the Lord *|
and wait patiently for him.
