"Bear fruits"

What are the fruits that we are bearing?  What are we giving birth by our actions?  This period of waiting in anticipation is paired with a deep sense of reflection on the end times, a deep sense of reflection on a time of judgment.  The Advent season is a time in which we would do well to reflect upon the ways that our faith has given rise to actual fruits - actions & practices that are new and life-giving.

When John goes to the wilderness, he is full of vitriol and anger for those who have not turned their life toward the light, who have not found a way to live in a way that exhibit "good fruits."  John admonishes his hearers to "Bear fruits worthy of repentance."  Turning to God, turning to the way of Jesus, turning to the way of light and life.

So, we too should reflect on this time as we prepare for Christmas as a time also when we consider the fruits of our faith and consider just how the fruits of our actions are worthy of judgment.

Bear good fruits!

~The Peter M. Carey

Luke 3:7-9
7 John said to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, 'You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Bear fruits worthy of repentance. Do not begin to say to yourselves, "We have Abraham as our ancestor"; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. 9 Even now the ax is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into
the fire.'
