Starsia Announces UVa Men's Lacrosse Team Captains for 2012
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Virginia head coach Dom Starsia announced that midfielder Colin Briggs, defenseman Chris Clements, midfielder Matt Kugler, and attackman Steele Stanwick have been selected as team captains for the 2012 campaign.
"I am very pleased to announce our captains for the 2011-2012 academic year," said Starsia. "I have been blessed throughout a long career to have worked closely with some outstanding young men who have served in this capacity. The value of true leadership was never more evident than in this past 2011 National Championship season. Being a captain is neither a popularity contest nor a simple assignment but Colin, Chris, Matt and Steele are clearly in the mold of those who have stood strongly in the recent past. Their selection is the first indication of the sharp focus and intent for this 2012 team."
Briggs, a senior from Narragansett, R.I., was named the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship after scoring five goals in UVa's 9-7 triumph over Maryland in the final. Briggs was a second-team selection on the USILA All-America team after tallying 29 goals and 12 assists in 2011. The All-ACC selection was third on the team with 41 points.
Clements, a senior from Baltimore, Md., moved to defense in January from a short-stick defensive midfielder position and also saw time as a long-stick midfielder. Clements appeared in all 18 games in 2011, starting 14 of them. He picked up 46 ground balls and caused 13 turnovers. Clements had three ground balls and two crucial caused turnovers against Maryland in the NCAA finals, helping the Cavaliers to the victory.
Kugler, a senior from Fairfax Station, Va., was a key piece that ran on UVa's second midfield in 2011. He finished with five goals and two assists in 17 games played in 2011. Kugler had important goals for the Cavaliers in the first round overtime win against Bucknell and again in the semifinal round against Denver.
Stanwick, a senior from Baltimore, Md., is a captain for a second season in a row after also winning the Tewaaraton Trophy, awarded to the top collegiate lacrosse player in the country. Stanwick helped set the table for the nation's No. 3 offense. The ACC Player of the Year and USILA first-team All-American, Stanwick contributed 32 goals and 38 assists to rank No. 4 nationally in points per game. His 38 assists ranked No. 3 nationally. Stanwick had nine goals and 12 assists for 21 points in the 2011 NCAA Tournament, four away from matching an NCAA Tournament record set by Eamon McEneaney in 1987.
"We are off to a good start and the potential for outstanding leadership that accompanies today's announcement moves us smartly in the direction of a meaningful finish," said Starsia.

UVa Men's Lacrosse getting ready for Hopkins
We are about 1/3rd of the way through the NCAA college lacrosse season, and spring has sprung here in Virginia (even if the snow hits tomorrow). Like my young kids, I am a huge UVa fan, and am grateful for the opportunity to see so much great lacrosse in this area.

Lent - Reflections by the people of St. Paul's Memorial
Another great blog which is offering daily reflections is hosted by St. Paul's Memorial, Charlottesville, VA. Several months ago, Bishop Peter Lee invited St. Paul's to participate in a pilot project to explore a method of "listening" on the deeply divisive issues of sexuality. I was asked to invite four people to engage in a conversation with four people from St. John the Baptist Church in Ivy. Their conversations would be moderated by a trained facilitator.
The group began meeting in Lent and their conversations were strictly confidential. The dialogue was not designed to bring consensus on sexuality issues, but allow viewpoints to be heard with respect. The facilitator has written a confidential report to Bishop Lee, who is most interested in knowing whether their method could have a wider application and what adjustments might need to be made. I am very grateful to Peter, Simeon, Margaret and Mildred for devoting considerable time, energy and commitment to this process, and especially for their courage engaging in a dialogue that required them to be vulnerable with each other and a group from a very different congregation than our own. The four have correctly concluded that to respect the process they cannot answer questions about it. Instead, our group has prepared a report to the parish. The report will be posted on the St. Paul's website, and I am posting it in full here:

The “Windsor Dialogue Listening Process” is part of a 2008 report from the “R-5 Commission” (appointed by Bishop Lee in 2007). The full report, including the details of the Listening Process format, is available on the Diocese of Virginia website at: HERE.
As part of the pilot program for the Listening Process, twelve parishes throughout the diocese were paired; St. Paul’s was matched with St. John the Baptist, Ivy. Our rector, the Rev. Jim Richardson, and St. John’s vicar, the Rev. Kathleen Sturges, each named four parishioners to the Listening Group. The Group met six times in two-hour sessions from March 8 to May 3, using the Windsor Dialogue Commission designated format, under the guidance of a diocese-trained facilitator.
At the initial session we agreed to “ground rules” for the group that included boundaries, confidentiality, and a commitment to listen carefully and make “I statements.” It is important to note that the stated objective of the Listening Process is neither persuasion nor argumentation, but open and honest communication with the goal of mutual understanding. The process is about listening and sharing, not debate; understanding without requiring agreement.

For the second day in Advent, I offer another "Jim" blog, this one is Fiat Lux blog, written by the Rev. James Richardson, the rector of St. Paul's Memorial Episcopal Church in Charlottesville, Virginia. Jim has only been at St. Paul's since this summer, but he is bringing a great deal of energy, a lot of good ideas, and clearly has some profound thoughts and a deep understanding of the scriptures, theology, and liturgy. His blog posts are eclectic and fun, and I enjoy reading his writing. Do check out his blog over at: http://spmcrector.blogspot.com/
I promise that we won't have "Jim" blogs every day - but there are a few I may recommend.
