Valerie C. Cooper,

associate professor of Religious Studies at the University of Virginia

Her first book, Word, Like Fire (University of Virginia Press), examined the biblical interpretation of Maria Stewart, a pioneering nineteenth-century African American woman political speaker. Prof. Cooper’s current research, forthcoming as The Test of Power: Racial Reconciliation in the Church (Abingdon Press), has taken her into the intersection of white and black evangelicalism by examining the successes and failures of racial reconciliation ventures among those churches.

Congregants are encouraged to wear academic regalia.

Join us each Sunday for worship at 8 and 10 am or 5:30pm (followed by dinner and fellowship). Canterbury Fellowship meets Tuesdays at 5:30 at the Canterbury House across Chancelor Street from St. Paul's. Read more information here.

The funeral service for the Rev. Janice Robinson will be held on Saturday, September 15, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at The Washington National Cathedral. The Rt. Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde and the Rt. Rev. Jane Holmes Dixon will preside. Following the service there will be a reception on the Cathedral close.

Rest in peace and rise in glory, Janice Robinson! (update)

I received this email last night about the death of the Rev. Janice Robinson, a wonderful person who was a tremendous mentor and friend of mine while I was serving with her at Grace Episcopal Church in Silver Spring, Maryland. A sad time, but I feel so blessed to have been able to work with her, hear her preaching, participate in pastoral care, assist with liturgy, and meet with her weekly in supervisory sessions. She used to punctuate her deep and rich conversations with profound humor and lightness. Just about every supervisory session began with, "ok, it's your dime, what's up?" Before going in to the church, she would offer a prayer with the worship leaders and then would often say, "Let's go to church!" She would also remind me often of the fact that she did not fear death, rather, she knew that she was "going home." Blessings to you, Janice, on your homeward journey. I miss you deeply.

Rev. Janice's services will be held at the National Cathedral, September 15th, at 10am.

Family of Yeardley Love embraces field at Notre Dame Prep as lasting legacy

In the emotional years since the murder of Yeardley Love in May 2010, her mother, Sharon, and older sister, Lexie, have had one thing to distract them from from their sadness, a "driving force," as Lexie called it, that has kept them afloat when little else could.

On Sunday, that driving force — the Yeardley Love Field at the shared alma mater of the two sisters and their mother, Notre Dame Preparatory School in Towson — will be dedicated at a Sept. 9 ceremony expected to include hundreds of family members, friends and current students.

"Our good friends were our lifeboat," Sharon Love said this week, recalling the family's journey.

"Good friends, and total strangers," Sharon Love said. "We've gotten so much support from so many, both emotionally and financially. That's all I felt kept us afloat. It still does."
