The Rev. Canon G.P. Gutierrez elected the next Bishop of Pennsylvania

[Episcopal News Service] The Rev. Canon Daniel G. P. Gutierrez, canon to the ordinary in the Episcopal Diocese of the Rio Grande, was elected March 12 to be the next bishop of theEpiscopal Diocese of Pennsylvania.

Gutierrez was elected on the fourth ballot, receiving 100 votes in the lay order and 133 in the clergy order. On that ballot, 84 lay votes and 130 clergy votes were need for an election. The electing convention met at Philadelphia Episcopal Cathedral.

Pending the canonically required confirmation by a majority of the church’s House of Bishops and by a majority of the Diocesan Standing Committees in the church, Gutierrez will be ordained and consecrated July 16 at New Covenant Church in the Germantown area of Philadelphia.

“With joy and thankfulness to God, we announce that the Rev. Canon Daniel G. P. Gutierrez has been elected bishop diocesan of the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania. He brings unique gifts to this ministry of leadership and pastoral presence in a time of change. We look forward to our shared ministry and commitment to serving Jesus Christ in this diverse and dynamic diocese,” the Rev. Katherine Andonian, chair of the Diocesan Standing Committee and the rector of Church of the Holy Spirit, Harleysville, said in a press release.

The Standing Committee of the Episcopal Diocese of Minnesota is pleased to announce that the Rev. Brian Prior has been elected IX Bishop of Minnesota.

Prior has been the Rector of the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection in Spokane, Washington since 1996. Among the many boards and committees on which he serves, Rev. Prior is the Vice President of the House of Deputies of the General Convention of The Episcopal Church. He received his M.Div. from Church Divinity of the Pacific in Berkeley, California in 1987. Rev. Prior has been married to Staci Hubbard Prior for 21 years. They have two teenage sons.

Vicar of Dibley on Youtube

After reading the discussion on Susan Russell's blog, An Inch at a Time about the discussion about women becoming bishops in England, one commenter mentioned the Vicar of Dibley, and specifically the first episode....

I'm not sure how long these videos will stay up on youtube, but while you have a chance, you should check them out. If you're not familiar with this wonderful BBC series, you are in for a treat. In the small British town of "Dibley" there is a new "Vicar" (priest serving a parish, sometimes with the salary paid in part by the bishop) at the local Anglican (what we in the U.S. call Episcopal) Church. To many people's horror, the new vicar is.... a WOMAN! And, what a wonderful person she is,...in many ways! As the English Church is now debating whether there should be female bishops in the church, it is quite interesting to look at the first episode of the Vicar of Dibley (just click below). I'm a big fan of the show, and yes, I do know that it is not necessarily an accurate description of the clergy in England, but it is still a great deal of fun!

Anglican bishops and their spouses marched on London on July 24 in support of poverty reduction worldwide.

Just one of many reasons I love the Episcopal Church!

We've got some great bishops, and a growing number of them just happen to be women! Awesome.
